Manager, National Consumer Promotions

The Consumer Promotions Manager is responsible for delivering optimal execution in connecting with the consumer along the path to purchase.  In this role, you will be responsible for developing and communicating commercial promotional strategies that drive executional excellence, brand and customer growth and help to deliver North American business results.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Development and activation of annual consumer promotions strategy and plan in collaboration with Media-to-Shelf cross functional team; including finance, brand, shopper, sales, agencies and key vendor partners that deliver against brand objectives based on insights and past performance/results
    • Align with brand team on promotional priorities and goals, share promotional plan for alignment, and share out with key stakeholders
    • Collaborate with Shopper teams to understand key retailer priorities and what national tactics/programs can be leveraged and are critical for success
    • Review past program results including MMA’s, program results/recaps, and case studies vs. benchmarks and historical SCJ performance to optimize future programs and develop learning agenda
    • Attend and share promotional plans at FOCO meetings, SME calls

  • Infuse consumer and shopper insights into promotional planning in new ways, creating connectivity between the Sales, Shopper and Consumer Promotion activations
    • Work with key vendors to understand industry trends and insights from SCJ activations
    • Work with industry experts on trends and insights that can be leveraged in activations (e.g. Kantar, Agencies)
    • Work with shopper teams, sales teams and retailer teams to understand how consumer promotions can support sales growth and be leveraged by retailer/shopper teams
  • Accountable for developing and managing national consumer promotions budget; reviewing and approving estimates and invoices
    • Develop initial budgets based on guidance (from brand finance); update as needed
    • Maintain brand budgets, reconciling monthly with actual spend based on invoices and redemption data.  Alert finance and brand team to any changes in budget or pacing.
    • Review all estimates vs. budget, invoices vs. estimates, and invoices vs. budget to ensure accuracy
    • Review all redemptions (from Alinea coupon system) vs. budget and update regularly
  • Manage all promotional programs to deliver on time and on budget; including timelines, specs, creative inputs, and contracts
    • Project management expert; work with vendors, agencies, brands and cross functional teams to build timelines that deliver programs to spec and on schedule
    • Maintain current status reports and share regularly with brand leads
    • Manage development of creative briefs with Brand teams using the appropriate brand assets/toolkits for national promotion activations
    • Communicate promotional program details to key stakeholders; using calendars and sell-sheets, to facilitate sales teams ability to leverage with retailers
  • Manage coupon strategy, development, and tracking
    • Become coupon expert; understanding the DNA of offers, how they are developed and how they are used across different retailers (family codes, POS system scanning) to minimize fraud and misuse
    • Manage the Glade coupon family codes; review regularly
    • Understand impact of different offer values, expiration dates, multiple units and other coupon levers on redemptions and performance
  • Align on measurement/KPI’s, analyze results vs. benchmarks, recap and share results for key programs. 
    • Work collaboratively with SCJ analytics team (CIBA) to measure results (MMA’s)
  • Demonstrate curiosity and an ‘always learning’ mindset amongst consumer promotions & shopper
    • Develop test and learn opportunities for new promotional initiatives that constantly challenge SCJ to push the boundaries on promotional tactics
    • Explore trends and insights that might be opportunity for SCJ to test/learn through industry leaders, vendor partners, agency partners
    • Attend industry events (e.g. P2P) and network with industry experts
  • Create and develop consumer promotions partnerships with outside organizations and non-competes that grow sales for SCJ and category as appropriate based on Brand objectives
    • Based on brand objectives, FOCO plans, and Agency recommendations, seek out partnerships and/or vendors who can achieve objectives and drive sales
  • Responsible for managing own personal and professional development; training, experiences
    • Opportunities to be involved in SCJ organizations that support employees or the community
    • Training opportunities within SCJ; self-directed and group sessions
    • External industry events, training, organizations, memberships

Required Skills / Experience / Competencies:

  • Undergraduate degree required and 5+ years of Consumer Promotions and/or Marketing experience.  Advanced Degree preferred.

  • Responsible for working with internal stakeholders (i.e. Brands) and Agency(s) of record to collaboratively deliver promotional plans that are on strategy, on budget, and delivered on time
  • Responsible for managing vendors/partners to deliver strategic recommendations and programs that deliver on brand financial objectives and contractual obligations
  • Coach and mentor promotion assistant for future increased responsibilities
  • Individual development and career planning for self

Technical Skills

  • Experience in the CPG industry either on the client or agency side
  • Experience with Hispanic, AAs and other ethnic work is a plus
  • Experience with traditional as well as digital/social and emerging promotional tactics
  • Exceptional computer skills: Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
  • Presentation development
  • Financial / Budgeting experience
  • Analytical skills; ability to analyze data and draw conclusions that drive efficiency/effectiveness
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies and tools
  • Exceptional organizational and planning skills, ability to prioritize
  • Excellent communications skills - written, oral, email, presentations
