Associate Manager - Packaging Engineer

Job Details:


The most important tasks and responsibilities in this position are:

  • Lead qualification and commercial deployment of packaging components within EMEA region (Europe, Middle East, Africa)
  • R&D lead for product changes & partnered with global peers. Leading technical decision making and effective peer communication.
  • Working focused on one product category with a backup secondary product category
  • Leading partnerships with Regional Technical Functions as well as Global Innovation Centers (US and China)
  • Define packaging components/manufacturing instructions by executing required trials
  • Supporting varied manufacturing base (100+ internal SCJ factories & third-party manufacturers)
  • Ensuring product compliance with external legislation/directives and SCJ’s corporate standards
  • Work together with other colleagues in the center of excellence packaging department, Cat RDE, Engineering, Quality
  • Ability to react with urgency/pressure when Force Majeure projects impact business continuity
  • Act swiftly to drive recovery when risks make potential impact to project delivery, providing alternate course of action to ensure to deliver original commitments
  • Identify and work on cost saving opportunities
  • Ability to handle and manage project tasks for project up to medium – high complexity, up to 5 clusters, 4+ product formats
  • Onboard and Mentor Associate packaging engineers.

In case the organization requires, it could be that the following tasks and/or projects will become the temporary responsibility of the employee

  • Temporary manage activities from the associate manager packaging engineer in case of need
  • Lead category portfolio overview and execution for packaging engineer tasks
  • Lead improvement initiatives within packaging team

Functional Expertise

  • Validate the scope of work needed for the packaging of a new/changed product
  • Design & implementation for unit boxes, labels, corrugated cases, bottles, cans and caps
  • Define and create the specifications, functional attributes, and bill of materials (BOM) for existing and new packaging/products
  • Apply systems thinking to the development of robust specifications that define required quality and collaborate with manufacturing to execute product specifications
  • Qualify both existing and new packaging by recommending validation test plans to platform and successful execution. Including qualification of plastic components from new/replacement moulds
  • Defines packaging process parameters and success criteria and deliver results for: Process and Product Validation (PPV) and Product Line Qualification (PLQ)
  • Identify root causes and performance gaps, escalating information to appropriate function
  • Ensure good quality shipment by applying distribution test protocols and industry methods to withstand global supply chain environment and to meet consumer expectations. Adapt pallet configurations for various palletizer technologies and supply chain requirements
  • Recommend regional supply chain improvements (e.g., shelf calculator, optimize pallet usage/ sea container)
  • Recommend improvements to current state of a packaging component (e.g., make more cost effective, more sustainable, more Post-Consumer Recycled content, improve overall equipment effectiveness, etc.)
  • Drive to reduce costs during product design. Define & compare appropriate cost estimates on various packaging components & processes (e.g., material, print process, structure or form, etc.)Identify root causes and performance gaps, escalating information to appropriate function


  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in engineering or science - Industrial Design, Packaging, Materials
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience in a role of packaging engineer, component design, materials or similar
  • Proven ability to lead and influence peers in multiple running projects
  • Exhibits excellent organizational, prioritizing and problem-solving skills
  •  Expertise in production and packaging environments
  • Ability to tailor communication (e.g. content, style and medium) to connect with diverse audience ranging from local / regional management to key stakeholders
  • Ability to read cues from diverse listeners to assess when and how to change planned communication approach to effectively deliver message
  • Ability to understand others’ complex or underlying needs, motivations, emotions or concerns, communicating effectively despite the sensitivity of the situation
  • Decision maker for problems up to a medium/high grade of complexity
  • Ability to handle and manage projects up to medium - high complexity
  • Shows Integrity and Reliability, personal ownership and team player
  • High proficiency in English, both written and oral
  • International experience and exposure a plus

Knowledge and competencies

  • Take personal ownership for the delivery of specific, straightforward components of larger projects
  • Take personal responsibility, with guidance, for straightforward projects, involving coordinating others
  • Monitor the quality and drive progress of well-defined projects
