Associate Manager, Formulator

The Associate Manager, Formulation, Design to Value will support cost savings idea creation through teardown participation and leadership, input to a robust pipeline of savings, and lead technical concept validation to deliver cost savings goals across multiple years for future sufficiency.  This role on the Design to Value team will lead within teardowns and workshops the technical feasibility of revised formulas and raw material resilience across BUs with primary focus on SC Johnson Lifestyle Brands.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Partner with cross functional stakeholders to develop the pipeline, identify new sources of value, and cost savings opportunities across portfolios, categories, and regions:

  • Support procurement sourcing and negotiation strategies through assessment of secondary qualification and optimization opportunities for chemical ingredients. Prioritize evaluations to optimize savings.

  • Participate in teardowns and workshops to deliver cost savings ideas and DP improvements for the Raw Material Portfolio across BUs.

  • Develop facilitation and leadership skills from supporting workshops to lead focused teardowns and workshops across multiple platforms and BUs to successfully create idea funnels.

  • Support best practice sharing and idea brainstorming within each BU to drive broader scale of savings initiatives and speed to market.

  • Partner with external suppliers to leverage their capabilities in solving current technical needs and enabling future cost savings pipelines.  Work with Category RDE, DTV RDE, and Procurement to optimize the TWW submissions, evaluations, and project execution.

  • Deliver a robust pipeline of ideas for cost savings within each BU, with an emphasis on the Lifestyle Brands business.

Lead Technical Development and Qualification of formulation changes:

  • Lead the technical development of modified formulations on cross-functional teams in support of value-add improvements.  

  • Conduct lab scale experiments to demonstrate parity of alternative materials and support the scale-up, trial plans, and manufacturing qualification for newly qualified ingredients.

  • Update chemical specifications and data accuracy in product lifecycle management software.

  • Collaborate with multifunctional core teams to successfully identify, develop and launch modified products or manufacturing improvements in an accelerated manner.  

  • Communicate complex ideas accurately and concisely to colleagues at all levels and disciplines.  

Apply chemical sciences and chemistry principles to deliver robust cost savings pipelines:

  • Understand the functional properties, proper use, and the environmental impact of ingredients.

  • Provide innovative ideas, expertise, and knowledge with a high degree of integrity, speed, and a results-oriented approach.

  • Scientific curiosity and ability to utilize available external resources (patent literature, suppliers, etc.) to identify applicable new technologies and bring those technologies in-house.

  • Write and review procedures, test protocols, and specifications needed to support product development activities for new formulas and packages.

Required Skills / Experience / Competencies:

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related

  • Min 5 years of relevant work experience in the consumer products - cleaning, personal care or related field, or an advanced degree with 3+ years relevant work experience

  • Military experience considered in lieu of education requirement

  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States

Preferred Skills / Experience / Competencies:

Technical Experience:

  • Experience with cost savings methodology (Lean, 6Sigma, etc) and application to product design, manufacturability, and total end-to-end cost reduction

  • Working knowledge of blending and filling processes across common industry equipment, within manufacturing environments and knowledge of scale-up and manufacturing best practices

  • Experience in managing cross-functional stakeholder relationships

Professional Skills:

  • Strong leadership, influence, and cross-functional teaming skills to effectively work across internal organizational boundaries

  • Possess an understanding of regulatory processes, i.e., EPA registrations; experience is desirable.

  • In-depth knowledge of the product development process and experience related to various formulation and delivery system technologies is considered a plus (e.g., aerosol formulation, emulsion chemistry, gel formulation, polymer chemistry, reaction products, surfactants, solvents)

  • Experience with directing the efforts of external vendors and consultants is preferred

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Highly proactive and results-oriented approach

  • Ability to analyze data and assimilate relevant data into recommendations and decisions

  • High proficiency with computer systems and relevant software applications

Job Requirements:

  • Full Time

  • 10% travel may be required

  • Ability to lift 10-30 lbs

  • Remote work is available one a week for eligible employees
