Associate Manager, Material Science

As the Associate Manager, Material Scientist you will lead a variety of activities related to better understanding our polymer materials and components to meet the expanding organizational and market needs of our business.

You will work under supervision within Science & Technology.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Apply scientific skills to research technologies and act as a technical consultant to aid in the ideation, development, commercialization, and on-going production of SCJ products

  • Assist, initiate, plan, and execute critical scientific research and development projects by conducting laboratory experiments and managing internal project efforts

  • Identify opportunities for new products and act as a materials resource liaison for business development teams

  • Conduct performance testing to support claims

  • Perform failure and root cause analysis for SCJ products and provide insights on product improvement

  • Support company sustainability initiatives to improve the sustainability profile for SCJ products

  • Meet with material suppliers to be aware of new raw materials, especially in relation to recycled materials

  • Investigate new raw materials and technologies through laboratory experimentation, record findings, and suggest applications

  • Build and expand internal technical capabilities by researching, identifying, and purchasing new equipment needed

  • Manage external project efforts at contract research laboratories

  • Continue ongoing awareness of current scientific patent, literature, and industry trends

  • Prepare technical reports, summaries, and presentations

  • Ensure transfer of technologies to various business divisions in a proactive manner

  • Create and adhere to project plans and timelines

 Other Responsibilities:

  • Follow good scientific practices to plan experiments, generate and analyze data, and draw conclusions to make recommendations

  • Follow general lab safety guidelines and maintain a clean, orderly work area

  • Travel to outside partners and industry events

  • Utilize knowledge of experimental design (DOE) and statistics to efficiently select appropriate course(s) of action to meet business needs

  • Utilize available external resources to identify applicable new technologies and recommend bringing those technologies in-house, (e.g. by searching scientific and patent literature, outside contacts, suppliers, etc.)

Required Skills / Experience / Competencies:

  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States

  • Masters degree in polymer science/chemistry or related materials science field with a strong theoretical and/or experimental background in polymers/materials evaluation especially as it applies to understanding the chemistry, thermal, rheological, mechanical, and microscopic properties of polymers.

  • Minimum of 3 years of post-degree experience.

Preferred Skills / Experience / Competencies:

  • PhD in polymer science/chemistry or related materials science field with a strong theoretical and/or experimental background in polymers/materials evaluation especially as it applies to understanding the chemistry, thermal, rheological, mechanical, and microscopic properties of polymers.

  • Experience in the theory and application of solubility parameters to predict material compatibility with product chemistries across all product categories and predict shelf-life behavior

  • Familiarity with a variety of polymers and additives that affect performance of materials associated with consumer products and experience with DSC, TGA, DMA, rheology, FTIR, mechanical property testing and microscopy analysis

  • Provide innovative ideas and knowledge with a high degree of integrity, speed, and a results-oriented approach

  • Explore new technologies and materials, which may have application for product lines and ability to design experiments to evaluate the performance attributes of materials

  • Scientific curiosity and the ability to solve technical problems related to polymer materials

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to communicate accurately and concisely to multiple levels within the company

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to lift 10 – 40 pounds

  • Remote work is available once a week for eligible employees
