Summary

The Associate Manager, Packaging Engineer is responsible to lead the technical development of new or revised packaging materials & products on global brands. This role will identify & lead technology advancements and develop new products/packages which expand the organizational and market needs for the assigned portion of our business.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Identify and apply new and existing packaging materials and technologies towards the development of innovative new products and the enhancement of existing products that consumers find appealing and easy to use, packaging that is compelling and allows SC Johnson to "win at the store shelf"
  • Evaluate & present recommendations for technology solutions that can be leveraged in new products/packaging to provide greater value to the consumer and SC Johnson
  • Partner with external suppliers and vendors to identify collaboration opportunities to enable a robust technology pipeline
  • Collaborate with battleground teams to maintain a robust technology horizon and technical roadmap
  • Design, coordinate, and complete performance and compatibility testing in support of packaging component changes; aerosol packaging experience desired
  • Develop & manage packaging specifications and finished good assembly specifications; aerosol packaging experience desired
  • Execute domestic and global packaging development projects by creating and managing effective and efficient project timelines and related success criteria to realize on-time project completion dates
  • Collaborate with multifunctional core teams (RD&E, Design, Marketing, Marketing Research, and Product Supply) to successfully identify, develop and launch new products in an accelerated manner
  • Provide strong technical leadership within a cross-functional team to drive the design and development of innovative new products or optimization of existing packages

Functional Skills and Expertise

  • Knowledge of packaging technology and materials and the application of sound scientific principles to the development of new and revised packaging
  • Demonstrated growth in ability to acquire, expand and apply advances within state of the art packaging technology, utilizing expertise to enable the successful commercialization of new ideas driving consumer and corporate value
  • Strong technical expertise and working knowledge of multiple packaging related disciplines, such as: aerosols, dispensing systems, plastic parts and related molding technology, along with scale-up and manufacturing line requirements; expertise in aerosols and/or dispensing systems desired
  • Experience and technical competency in primary, secondary and tertiary packaging design and qualification (e.g. product/package compatibility, manufacturing and distribution qualification)
  • Technical curiosity to investigate the source of issues & opportunities, while providing creative ideas, quality of work, and speed through a results-oriented approach
  • Utilize available resources (patent literature, suppliers, etc.) to identify internal & external technologies, including their limits of use, and assess which ones apply to scope of work or brand strategy
  • Experience in partnering with external suppliers to leverage their capabilities in solving current technical needs and enabling future pipelines, including co-development
  • Ability to define and build alignment from technical stakeholders around an effective research plan
  • Write and review lab test procedures, scale-up protocols, and specifications needed to support product development activities
  • Product Management systems experience (i.e. SAP Product Lifecycle Management)

Leadership

  • Strong leadership, influence, and cross-functional teaming skills to effectively work across internal organizational boundaries
  • Strong oral & written communication skills, with ability to deliver a concise message across levels within the organization
  • Interact closely with marketing and consumers to research and identify critical product and package attributes
  • Demonstrated knowledge of consumer testing techniques and execution of appropriate studies to evaluate product performance
  • Ability to lead technical work ranging from individual research initiatives to more complex projects, serving as the RDE Technical Lead when called upon to manage multiple project work-streams
  • Teach, coach, mentor and develop the technical capability of the organization through professional leadership

Required Skills / Experience / Competencies

  • Bachelor of Science in Packaging, Material Science, or related degree and at least 6 years of related RD&E experience, or an advanced degree with 4 years of related RD&E experience

Preferred Skills / Experience / Competencies

  • In-depth knowledge of the product development process and experience related to various delivery system technologies is considered a plus (e.g., aerosol formulation, emulsion chemistry, surfactants, solvents, fragrance chemistry/compatibility)
  • Development, testing, specification, and commercialization of packaging components; aerosol and/or dispensing systems experience desired
  • Experience with finite element analysis & CAD systems
  • Experience with directing the efforts of external vendors and consultants is preferred, including co-development
  • Demonstrated capability to handle multiple projects/programs concurrently
  • Clear and concise communication skills with the ability to orchestrate effective meetings and written materials prompting the appropriate discussions and accountability
  • Ability to successfully navigate in a complex, evolving, global environment

Job Requirements

  • Full-time Monday-Friday core office hours
  • Minimum 10% travel
  • Ability to sit, stand, and lift 0-25 lbs
