Director, Corporate Sustainability

The Director, Corporate Sustainability will establish the strategy and direction of our corporate plastic sustainability initiatives including long-range plans and short-term goals.  This individual will raise expertise on environmental sustainability across the organization via influence of cross-functional partners and collaboration with key influencers.  Additionally, he/she will connect the organization to external partners, non-government organizations and customers in furthering plastic and packaging initiatives beyond the company.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Drive corporate sustainability objectives to achieve 5-year goals and external commitments
  • Establish the strategy and vision for the organization’s approach to plastic for the next 10+ years
  • Oversee sustainability strategies for eliminating plastic waste, improve packaging and make our products easy to recycle globally
  • Lead SCJ’s new plastic economy global commitments and related relationship management and reporting with external partners including the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Plastic Bank and others
  • Develop, gain alignment, and lead implementation of packaging waste reduction, recycled material content other key corporate strategic focus areas
  • Lead packaging sustainability strategy across the organization with influence over the strategy and goals associated with furthering our position in packaging sustainability
  • Collaborate with Sustainability experts beyond plastic to consult across SCJ’s entire spectrum of sustainability plans and initiatives
  • Attend key external global conferences and meetings related to Sustainability (~4 per year)

Required Skills / Experience / Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree preferred)
  • 7+ years of experience in Sustainability
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in another global leading manufacturer (preferably within a consumer-packaged goods (CPG) company)

Preferred Skills / Experience / Competencies:

  • Expert understanding of environmental and sustainability across aspects of Plastic, Chemistry, Carbon, Waste and Deforestation strongly preferred
  • Ability to lead initiatives across technical and commercial teams to ensure delivery of organizational goals
  • Skilled in establishing strong relationships with sustainability executives
  • Strong professional executive presence
  • Ability to persuade without having direct authority
  • Excellent communication skills whether technical, business oriented
  • Functional expertise such as RD&E, Marketing, Sales, or Environmental Science
  • Creative solution generator with a focus on possibility
  • Sound business acumen  

Job Requirements:

  • Full time on-site work at SC Johnson’s global headquarters in Racine, WI - this is not a remote role
  • Occasional domestic and international business travel
