Summary:

The Senior Associate, Chemistry leads a variety of functions related the formulation, labeling, and consumer acceptability of our products to meet the expanding organizational and market needs of our business.  The position requires attention to detail, accuracy in information retention, a high degree of creativity, initiative, and aesthetic appreciation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop formulations to meet internal ingredient standards and industry best practices for safety, scientific significance, accuracy, and recordkeeping
  • Conduct performance testing to support claims and product validation
  • Optimize formulation ingredients to manage costs/availability for intended function
  • Monitor stability testing, including first production runs and pilot-scale test packs, and maintain records thoroughly and concisely compliant with good laboratory practices
  • Prepare samples and track documentation for micro-challenge testing, toxicological testing, and performance testing; coordinate outside testing with appropriate resources as required
  • Meet with chemical suppliers to be aware of new raw materials and the possible second sourcing of raw materials to meet cost objectives
  • Review trade publications and other industry news sources for raw material information, regulatory updates and educational opportunities
  • Investigate new raw materials and technologies through laboratory experimentation, record findings and suggest applications
  • Generate and analyze data, and draw conclusions to make recommendations
  • Prepare and/or coordinate preparation of sales samples as needed for photography, trade shows, etc.
  • Adhere to project milestones and launch time deadlines
  • Input data requirements in SAP/PLM with accuracy and attention to detail
  • Participate in cross functional teams for new product development and launches
  • Have awareness of regulatory and/or sustainability issues applicable to product launches
  • Follow general lab safety guidelines and maintain clean, orderly work area
  • Support sales team with customer questions and performance testing data
  • Work as a member of a fast-paced project team to create new products or product improvements that address consumer user criteria, needs and insights

Required Skills / Experience / Competencies

  • Four-year degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry or other related science
  • Minimum 4 years of experience in the consumer products industry and relevant R&D experience, or an advanced degree with at least 2 years relevant work experience

Preferred Skills / Experience / Competencies

  • Knowledge of the product development process and experience related to various formulation chemistry is considered a plus (e.g., aerosol formulation, emulsion chemistry, surfactants, solvents, fragrance chemistry/compatibility)
  • Aerosol formulation experience desired
  • Experience with Design of Experiments; experience with data analysis software a plus
  • Product Management systems experience (i.e. SAP Product Lifecycle Management)
  • Ability to operate standard laboratory equipment
  • Proven track record of meeting deadlines
  • Demonstrated capability to handle multiple projects/programs concurrently
  • Ability to multi-task and manage time effectively
  • Ability to lead technical work ranging from individual research initiatives to more complex projects
  • Clear and concise communication skills with the ability to orchestrate effective meetings and written materials prompting the appropriate discussions and accountability
  • Knowledge of consumer testing techniques and execution of appropriate studies to evaluate product performance
  • Technical curiosity to investigate the source of issues & opportunities, while providing creative ideas, quality of work, and speed through a results-oriented approach
  • Leadership, influence, and cross-functional teaming skills to effectively work across internal organizational boundaries
  • Ability to successfully navigate in a complex, evolving, global environment

Job Requirements

  • Full-time Monday-Friday core office hours
  • 0-10% travel
  • Ability to sit, stand, and lift 0-25 lbs
