The Senior Associate, Chemistry at S.C. Johnson & Son, Inc. in Racine, WI will work on the technical development of new product chemical formulations for SCJ brands.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • This position will be responsible for the following:

  • Develop new products, line extensions, and lead technology advancements, which will result in consumer preferred benefits and/or improve the environmental impact of the products;

  • Develop chemical formulations to meet internal ingredient standards and industry best practices for safety, scientific significance, accuracy, and recordkeeping;

  • Conduct chemical performance testing to support claims and product validation;

  • Ensure the maintenance and/or adherence to good laboratory practices and all safety regulations;

  • Maintain awareness of regulatory and/or sustainability issues applicable to product launches;

  • Develop necessary efficacy, stability, safety and performance data to successfully support EPA and international formulation registrations;

  • Work as a member of a fast-paced project team to create new products or product improvements that address consumer user criteria, needs and insights;

  • Write and/or review procedures, protocols, quality assurance specifications, test reports, and supplementary materials needed to support product development activities;

  • Develop and/or perform all chemical testing requirements on new formulas and packages;

  • Interact closely with marketing, procurement, regulatory affairs, and consumers to research and identify critical product attributes;

  • Assist in the interpretation of consumer test results and providing recommendations for product improvements and relevant claims;

  • Explore new technologies and materials, implementing advances in the state-of-the-art chemical sciences, and utilizing expertise to contribute to the successful commercialization of new ideas driving consumer and corporate values.

Required Skills / Experience / Competencies:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, or a closely related field;

  • Two years of experience developing various detailed formulations and delivery system technologies;

  • Two years of experience with each of the following: (1) utilize analytical techniques, including gas chromatography (GC) or high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for product characterization; (2) develop design of experiments and conduct statistical analysis to evaluate the performance attributes of aerosol, lotions, liquids, and gel products;(3) solve technical problems related to formulation systems and manufacturing batching, mixing, and in-line blending production of formulation for mass production; (4) formulation development and scale up of emulsion and surfactant based systems; (5) operate standard laboratory equipment to measure gel strength and gel point, including rheometer, viscometer, and pH meter; (6) monitor stability testing, including first production run stabilities; (7) prepare samples, document and execute micro-challenge testing, toxicological testing, clinical testing, and performance testing; (8) input data requirements into a formula tracking system with accuracy and attention to support worldwide governmental regulatory registrations; (9) troubleshoot production start-up of formulations to ensure product is meeting technical requirements; and, (10) develop and validate test methods for claim substantiation.
