Environmental Toxicologist

•            Location: Frimley, Surrey

•            Function: GSARA (global safety, assessment and regulatory affairs)

About the role

You will be responsible for ensuring SC Johnson pest control products are safe upon emission to the environment as required by prescribed regulatory standards, and internal corporate requirements. You will apply the principles and scientific methodologies of ecotoxicology, product exposure science, environmental fate and transport, and environmental risk assessment to conduct product safety assessments, manage rapidly changing scientific information and regulatory requirements, and monitor critical emerging issues that carry potential to impact the SCJ business. The role is responsible for interfacing with colleagues across Safety, Regulatory, RD&E, Marketing, and Legal functions.

Responsibilities:

  • Use both existing regulatory guidance and novel approaches to assess environmental risk of biocide pest control products in support of our global Business categories.
  • Deliver safety reviews for chemicals and formula mixtures in accordance with established procedures and ensure timelines are met.
  • Design and monitor in vivo, in vitro and/or bespoke exposure studies in accordance with applicable regulations and/or company policies
  • Develop higher-tier scenarios to assess chemicals and mixtures utilizing novel approaches, including but not limited to exposure science, environmental fate and transport models, environmental risk assessment, adverse outcome pathways, computational models, integrative exposure and toxicology approaches, endocrine disruption potential
  • Understand and communicate complex technical issues to internal and external and provide expert inputs and/or prepare technical response to questions from regulatory and other authorities
  • Lead the development of technical solutions for biocide pest control products, & options to mitigate potential risks, to RD&E Project Teams and where appropriate escalate.
  • Participate in applicable scientific organizations or trade associations and communicate any business-related items to appropriate Safety, Regulatory, RD&E, Marketing and/or Legal teams.

Experience you’ll bring:

  • Advanced degree in toxicology or ecological sciences with relevant industry experience
  • Strong theoretical and practical knowledge of regulatory toxicology, ecotoxicology, environmental fate, and environmental risk assessment and higher tier refinement strategies
  • Familiarity with European chemical and consumer product regulations including, but not limited to, GHS/CLP, EU Ecolabel, EU REACH, and/or EU BPR regulations and experience with global government authorities
  • Ability to keep up to speed with changing regulatory requirements and contribute to the discussions around proposed changes.
