ABOUT THE ROLE

SC Johnson has an exciting opportunity as a Senior Associate with our International Consumer Brands (ICB) Home Cleaning Team.  This role will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of subject matter experts and report to an R&D Manager.

As Senior Associate, you will contribute to the technical development of new or revised packaging materials & products. Your work will consist of qualifying new products/packages, line extensions, and leading technical tasks related to different business needs driven by organizational goals and market requirements. You will participate as a packaging subject matter expert on global cross-functional teams to lead the end-to-end packaging development of projects including primary, secondary, and ecommerce packaging. You will have a direct impact by ensuring that key project objectives and deliverables are met. This includes discovery and development activity that spans technology identification, feasibility assessment, and application of technical solutions into effective product design and contributing to the technical development & qualification of new or revised packaging materials & products.

To be successful in this role, you should bring curiosity and bias for action to assigned projects, contributing packaging technology options that fulfil consumer needs through product design to enable SCJ’s growth goals. Additionally, you will be challenged to stay abreast of emerging technologies in relevant categories for SCJ’s strategic growth businesses, including sustainability. Additionally, participation in mentorship and R&D Community of Practice activities is strongly encouraged.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Bring creativity in approach to identifying and evaluating new packaging materials and components that unlock speed in execution

  • Provide expertise in areas of package design, material selection, performance characterization methods, and iterative prototyping to support test and learn model of NPD

  • Partner and lead outside vendors and design partners to assure the timely delivery of project milestones, including prototype samples, product qualification and scale-up activities

  • Collaborate with project manager and cross functional team to build project timeline, deliver key milestones, provide input on technical risks and mitigation plans

  • Develop validation and line qualification plans, perform lab tests, and document results in technical reports

  • Model R&D functional skills including effective communication, quality in design, regulatory compliance, product safety, and scientific rigor

  • Manage ambiguity & uncertainty across range of development activity by applying strategic thinking and business acumen for informed decision making

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING

  • Bachelor’s Degree in packaging engineering, packaging science or related field of engineering disciplines (e.g. Mechanical, Materials,) and 2+ years of relevant work experience; OR Masters’s Degree in packaging engineering, packaging science or related field of engineering disciplines (e.g. Mechanical, Materials)

  • Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States

PREFERRED EXPERIENCES AND SKILLS

  • Experience with packaging design and qualification (e.g., product/package compatibility, distribution/warehouse testing, and manufacturing qualification)

  • Experience with aerosols and liquid packaging and/or plastic molding techniques

  • Knowledge of e-commerce packaging design & qualification, Special Packs, and the warehouse club class of trade along with Department of Transportation (DOT)regulations

  • Strong team player, Proactive, results-driven, and initiative-taker

  • Ability to communicate effectively through oral and written presentations to various organizational levels both internally and externally

  • Microsoft Office and adaptable/willing to learn supporting technical platforms such as PLM (Product Lifecycle Management)

  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • This position will be located at Sam’s campus and works in an office environment

  • Position is Full-Time, regular business hours, Monday-Friday

  • Remote work available once a week for eligible employees

  • Ability to lift 10 – 40 pounds

  • Up to 25% travel primarily international (but can include domestic)

  • This position is eligible for domestic relocation
